Petri simulates life forms living in petri dishes. You create your own species, make as many little life forms as you wish, and let them go. You control the environment, the species behavior, and discover what works and what doesn't.
Petri's Easy view lets you skip the genetics and make simple species that are fun to play with while learning how to use Petri's features. Petri's Expert view lets you create species with a mix of genetic traits and behaviors-the children can inherit different traits from their parents, and as a group the species can adapt to the environment.
Petri's Easy view has interface elements (icons, pictures) which help early reading children recognize parts of the program. Easy view was tested on a first grader ... she loves squirting life forms into her dish and watching them eat each other.
Petri is available native for the PowerMac. There is another version for the 680x0-based Macs. If you get Petri from an on-line service, download the version that's right for your Mac.
Petri requires System 7 and a color display. A big dish of life forms can take up to 4 MB of memory.
